What is the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES)
One of the most widely used and validated tools for assessing employee engagement is the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), developed by Schaufeli and colleagues (2002).
The UWES is a great tool for employers to use to measure employee engagement, based on its theoretical background, psychometric properties and practical applications.

Employee Engagement
Employee engagement is a key factor for organizational success, as it reflects the degree to which employees are committed, motivated, and involved in their work. However, measuring employee engagement is not an easy task, as different definitions and instruments exist in the literature. VP Culture discovered the UWES test and how beneficial it can be for your team.
Three Dimensions of Engagement
Vigor: the high levels of energy and mental resilience that employees display while working, as well as their willingness to invest effort and overcome difficulties.
Dedication: the sense of significance, enthusiasm, inspiration and pride that employees derive from their work, as well as their identification with it.
Absorption: the degree of concentration and immersion that employees experience in their work, as well as the difficulty they have to detach from it.

Reliability and Validity
Reliability: UWES has been extensively tested and validated across different countries, cultures, languages, occupations and industries. The test has shown high internal consistency and test-retest reliability, indicating that it measures work engagement consistently and stably over time.
Validity: correlates positively with various indicators of individual and organizational performance, such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, productivity, creativity, customer satisfaction and profitability. And it captures the essence of work engagement as a positive psychological state that benefits both employees and employers.
Promotes a Good Work Environment
- Focuses on the interior psychological self-reporting of the employee.
- Does not leave employees with a feeling of being mistreated by their organization, but rather reflects their own positive attitude towards their work.
- Gallup Q12 test do not capture the intrinsic motivation and enthusiasm that characterize work engagement, but the UWES does.
